About this design

Created in 1993 and taking the world by storm in the process, 'Doom' is one of the most influential games of all time. Its popularity helped propel the 'first-person shooter' genre and indeed the PC platform to the forefront of gaming.

Doom immersed the player in an intense 3D world, with gory graphics and violent gameplay. The concept was simple. You played a lone marine on a space station, into which the gates of hell have opened. Bombarded by thousands of demons, you simply have to blast your way to the end of each level.

The game's selection of weapons deserves a special mention. Not only did the BFG 9000 gain legendary status but the arsenal was so varied and well balanced that its influence can be seen in many fps games today.

Doom was also the first game ever to allow competitive gameplay over an Ethernet network, coining the phrase 'Deathmatch' and being responsible for many hours of lost productivity in offices, colleges and universities across the globe.
