About this design

Level 256 on Pac-Man is like the gamer's holy grail. As if it weren't hard enough to get to level 256 in the first place, gamers who did eventually get there were presented with a level screen that can only be described as 'Pac-Man Pizza'.

The technical reason for this is that the level counter is stored as a single byte, meaning that it cannot go above 'FF' in hexidecimal or '256' in decimal. When you get to 256, the game attempts to draw 256 items of fruit on the screen which corrupts the entire right hand side.

It is highly speculated as to whether anyone has ever completed level 256 of Pac-Man, however in 1999 a gamer by the name of 'Billy Mitchel' was the first to achieve a 'perfect score' of 3,333,360 on Pac-Man, which involves getting to level 256 without losing a single life, then collecting all 9 power pills located on the garbled right hand side, losing a life and collecting all 9 power pills again.
