About this design
The success of the arcade game Double Dragon spawned many imitations. While most of these continued along the path of gang warfare, one game stood out for its fantasy setting. This was Sega's highly popular Golden Axe released in 1989.
Gameplay was in the mould of your usual scrolling beat 'em up, but it swapped fists for swords and axes. The differences didn't stop there. Instead of weapon items, players had the ability to mount fire-breathing dragons and a tail whipping birdy thing. Two players could choose between 3 characters, Ax Battler the barbarian, Gilius Thunderhead the dwarf and Tyris Flare the amazon. Each had their own style of magic which could be cast to deal damage in spectacular fashion. This magic ability was powered up by collecting potions from scurrying imps who would steal them back between levels.
Golden Axe breathed new life into the formula and spawned sequels and ports onto home platforms. Its success was due, in no small part, to the Conan influenced setting, gorgeous graphics and happy slashing gameplay.
