About this design
Seasoned retro gamers will instantly recognise the classic bomb-dropping bonanza that is Blitz.
Although variations and clones of this classic game were available for every home computer of the day, usually as 'type it yourself' pages of code printed in popular computing magazines, by far the most memorable was Mastertronic's 'New York Blitz' for the Commodore Vic-20.
Gameplay was simple and addictive. You pilot a plane that is steadily decending into the New York skyline. That is to say, it's going to crash nose-first into a skyscraper unless you clear a runway pretty darn quickly.
Clearing a runway is done by simply bombing the hell out of any pesky buildings that get in the way of you and a safe landing.
Of course if a game like this was developed today it'd be considered the height of bad taste, immediately banned, and its developers subject to brutal interrogation in some unofficial prison camp. The 80's however were heady days of fun, laughter and pixelated violence, and so this gem became ingrained in the hearts and memories of many an innocent child / wannabe terrorist.
